Short answer: If you plan to study, train or work in Germany, learning German online from A1 to B1 opens the most doors. Make it in Germany, the German government's portal, says B1 German is required for a vocational training (Ausbildung) visa, and the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) needs at least A1 German or B2 English. Our live online German programme runs from Basic to B1 with Goethe-Institut exam preparation at every level, in Indian and Central European time.
Last checked: 29 October 2026, on Make it in Germany (Federal Government of Germany) and the Goethe-Institut India websites.
What level of German do you need?
- Ausbildung (vocational training): B1, according to Make it in Germany, to get a visa for vocational training.
- Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte): German at A1 or above, or English at B2 or above, as a basic requirement.
- University study: the language level set by the university. English-taught programmes may not need German for admission, but German helps with part-time jobs and daily life.
- Living and working long term: the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is also used for settlement permits and naturalisation, according to the Goethe-Institut.
The Goethe-Zertifikat exams
The Goethe-Institut's B1 exam has four modules (reading, listening, writing and speaking) that can be taken separately or together. Our programme prepares you for Goethe A1, A2 and B1, including the pass marks for each level.
