Short answer: A visitor visa refusal is not the end. Read the refusal letter first: it lists the exact reasons. Canada says reapplying with the same documents will likely get the same answer, so fix the reasons named (usually ties to India, money for the trip or the purpose of the visit) and apply again with new evidence. For a Schengen visa you can also appeal, usually within a short deadline set by the country that refused you.

Step 1: Read the refusal letter line by line
Every refusal comes with written reasons. IRCC says your refusal letter lists the reason or reasons the officer refused your application. For Schengen countries, Article 32 of the EU Visa Code requires the refusal and its reasons to be given to you on a standard form, which also explains how to appeal. Write down each reason in your own words before you do anything else. Your next application has to answer each one.
Step 2: Match each reason to what you can fix
"Not satisfied you will leave at the end of your stay"
This reason appears in many refusals. Canada's visitor visa page says you must convince an officer that you have ties, such as a job, home, financial assets or family, that will take you back to your home country. The UK asks you to show you will leave at the end of your visit. Fix it with clear proof of what brings you back: a job letter with approved leave, business registration and GST or ITR records, property papers, and family responsibilities in India.
"Not enough money for the trip"
Canada asks that you have enough money for your stay, and the UK asks that you can support yourself and pay for your return journey (or that someone else funds it). Schengen countries must refuse if you cannot prove sufficient means for the stay and return. Fix it with bank statements that show a steady history, not a large deposit just before you apply, and explain any big credit with documents (sale deed, maturity of an FD, salary).
"Purpose of visit not clear"
Under the EU Visa Code, a visa must be refused if you do not justify the purpose and conditions of your stay. Fix it with a simple day-by-day plan, a genuine invitation letter from the person you are visiting (with their status in that country), hotel bookings where relevant, and a trip length that matches your leave and budget.
"Doubts about your documents or statements"
The Visa Code also lists doubts about the authenticity of documents or the reliability of what you said. Never submit a document you cannot explain. Make sure dates, names, income and travel history are the same on every form and every paper, including any earlier application.
Missing travel medical insurance (Schengen)
Schengen visas must be refused if you cannot show adequate and valid travel medical insurance where it is required. Buy a policy that covers all Schengen countries for the whole trip.
Step 3: Choose reapply, appeal or review
- Canada: IRCC says applying again with the same information will likely not change the decision, even if you use a representative. You can reapply when you have new information or documents. If you believe the process was unfair, the option IRCC names is a judicial review at the Federal Court of Canada, which is a legal process.
- United Kingdom: for a Standard Visitor visa, most people simply apply again with stronger evidence. The fee is £135 for a visa of up to 6 months, payable again on each new application.
- Schengen countries: Article 32 of the Visa Code gives you the right to appeal, under the national law of the country that refused you. Deadlines and fees differ by country. For example, the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs says an appeal must be filed within 15 days of receiving the refusal form, at the consulate that refused the visa, with an 80 euro fee.
Step 4: Always declare the earlier refusal
Visa forms ask about previous refusals. Answer truthfully on every future application, for every country. Hiding a refusal is far more harmful than the refusal itself, because it raises the documents and statements doubt described above.
Common mistakes after a refusal
- Reapplying within days with the same file.
- Adding a large deposit to the bank account just before applying.
- Changing the story: a different purpose, host or trip length with no explanation.
- Using an unlicensed agent. In Punjab, check that a travel or immigration agent is licensed under the Punjab Travel Professionals (Regulation) Act before you share documents or pay anyone.
Frequently asked questions
How soon can I reapply after a visitor visa refusal?
Canada's help centre does not set a waiting period; what matters is whether your situation or evidence has changed. Reapply when you can answer every refusal reason with new documents.
Does a Canada refusal affect my UK or Schengen application?
You must declare it when the form asks about previous refusals. A refusal you have fixed and explained honestly is far less of a problem than an unexplained or hidden one.
Can I appeal a Canada visitor visa refusal?
IRCC does not offer an appeal for visitor visas on its help page. You can reapply with new information, or seek a judicial review at the Federal Court if you believe the process was unfair.
What does "ties to home country" mean?
Things that bring you back: a job, home, financial assets or family, as IRCC puts it. Show them with documents, not just statements.
Can someone else pay for my trip?
For the UK, yes: GOV.UK says someone else can pay for your trip. For Canada and Schengen countries, follow the embassy's own checklist for sponsored visits, show proof of the relationship and the sponsor's finances, and still show your own ties to India.
