Short answer: For Australia, PTE Academic is accepted both for the Student visa (subclass 500) and for skilled and other visas that ask for an English level. For "Competent English", the Department of Home Affairs asks for at least 50 in each PTE Academic component (listening, reading, writing and speaking) for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. Our live online PTE coaching runs in batches that suit Australian time, for students in India and in Australia.

PTE scores for Australia: what changed in August 2025

  • Tests taken on or after 7 August 2025: Competent English needs at least 50 in each PTE Academic component. For IELTS (Academic or General Training) it is at least 6 in each.
  • Tests taken on or before 6 August 2025: the older PTE scores apply (47 listening, 48 reading, 51 writing, 54 speaking), and those results may be used until 6 August 2028, depending on the visa.
  • How recent: the score must normally be achieved in the 3 years before your visa application, depending on the subclass.
  • Same name, different test: Home Affairs notes that PTE Academic kept its name but the test and score scale changed, so check which table applies to your test date.

Higher levels (Proficient and Superior English) need higher scores and can add points for skilled visas; check the exact score for your visa on the Home Affairs website.
